BIODEV2030’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE POST-2020 GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY FRAMEWORK

Biodiversity and ecosystem services are deteriorating worldwide. According to the latest IPBES report, current trajectories are not sufficient to achieve the goals of conservation and sustainable use of nature. Profound transformative changes, including economic ones, are needed.

Since 2019, 16 countries have been experimenting the BIODEV2030 method to accelerate the mainstreaming of biodiversity into at least two economic sectors identified as priorities for biodiversity and the country’s development. This method is articulated in 3 key steps:

1. A scientific assessment of the threats to biodiversity,
2. An in-depth analysis of the most impacting sectors to identify avenues of commitment,
3. A sectoral and inter-sectoral dialogue within multi-stakeholder platforms.

The aim is to promote the voluntary commitment of private sector to mainstream biodiversity into their activities and to define priority actions to reduce pressures.

Based on the lessons drawned from this experience,
we wish to contribute to the negotiations and convince the Parties of the relevance of using a method such as BIODEV2030
to ensure the implementation of the future global biodiversity framework.

Indeed, a strategic and well-coordinated mainstreaming approach in several key sectors can contribute to the achievement of several targets of the future framework, in particular targets 14 (integration of biodiversity values in public policies), 15 (adoption of sustainable practices by businesses), 18 (reorientation of incentives and subsidies) and 19 (resource mobilisation).

Through the lens of BIODEV2030, the action plan for the long-term strategic approach to mainstreaming biodiversity (CBD/SBI/3/13/Add.1) could be complemented. It could thus refer to the BIODEV2030 method and in particular to the need to create a national intersectoral multi-stakeholder dialogue platform representative of all stakeholders. This platform would enable them to take ownership of biodiversity issues, take part in debates and be made responsible for actions and impacts.

During the COP15 (December 7 to 19, 2022 in Montreal) we will present concrete keys for the implementation of the future global biodiveristy framework and will give the floor to private stakeholders, whose mobilisation is necessary to achieve its objectives.
