From the COP15 biodiversity summit to the COP26 climate change conference

Mainstreaming at the heart of the international dialogue

Biodiversity mainstreaming is at the heart of the international agenda this year.

The high-level segment of the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has been held one month after the IUCN World Conservation Congress. This first session took place from 11 to 15 October 2021 in a hybrid format, and brought together representatives from more than 100 countries.

BIODEV2030 in line with the Kunming Declaration

At this meeting, The Kunming declaration was adopted, which lists 17 commitments to stop biodiversity loss by 2030.

This text reflects the objectives of BIODEV2030!

It shows the willingness of states to promote the integration of biodiversity into decision-making processes; to strengthen cross-sectoral coordination mechanisms; to increase ecosystem-based approaches for addressing biodiversity loss and to work with all actors in society to encourage them to take on voluntary commitments towards nature.

All these commitments heighten the relevance of the pilot approach tested in the 16 participating countries, which is based on a scientific diagnosis of the threats to biodiversity in relation to the economic sectors in order to encourage a dialogue between the multiple stakeholders and thus lead to voluntary sectoral commitments

climate and biodiversity: two inseparable elements of the same challenge

The 17 recommendations of the Kunming Declaration highlight the importance of biodiversity mainstreaming for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, which will be discussed in a coming work session in Geneva in January 2022 and adopted during the second session of COP15 on 25 April to 8 May 2022 to be held in Kunming, China.

As the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) opens in Glasgow (UK), it is now crucial to treat climate and biodiversity issues as two inseparable elements of the same challenge.

BIODEV2030 mobilises stakeholders so that specific action can be taken towards the mainstreaming of biodiversity and the sustainable management of ecosystems and for these to be recognised as key solutions to current environmental challenges!
