APAC, the African Protected Areas Congress organized by IUCN, will take place from July 18 to 23, 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda.
This is the first edition of the event, which will bring together political leaders, citizens and interest groups from across the African continent.
Its aim is to highlight the role of protected areas in conserving nature, safeguarding Africa's emblematic flora and fauna and providing vital ecosystem services.
The BIODEV2030 team, deployed in 16 countries, 13 of which are in Africa, will be mobilized during the congress to place the issue of integrating biodiversity into the development strategies of the main sectors of activity in BIODEV2030 countries at the heart of discussions.

3 BIODEV2030 highlights at the IUCN African Protected Areas Congress
July 20, 2:00 - 3:30 pm: Identifying the main threats to biodiversity to develop robust sectoral voluntary commitments: lessons from the BIODEV2030 project, based on a scientific approach
This session will focus on the key role played by institutions in integrating biodiversity into economic activities, in particular by the CBD's national focal points, looking back at the experience of Gabon and Ethiopia. This round table will also be an opportunity to hear the motivations of two sectors, agriculture and mining, for taking biodiversity into account in their activities.
July 20, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm: From OEWG4 (Nairobi) to COP15 (Montreal): lessons from the BIODEV2030 project and future challenges
The 16 pilot countries of the BIODEV2030 project have developed a common vision on the integration of biodiversity, and on how this issue should be integrated into the future global agreement under discussion. Join us to discover the testimonies of 4 BIODEV2030 countries (Ethiopia, Gabon, Benin and Madagascar) on the links between their BIODEV experience and the future post-2020 global biodiversity framework!
July 22 16:00 - 17:30: How to build ambitious, credible and action-oriented voluntary commitments? Lessons from 13 African countries involved in the BIODEV2030 initiative
The conference will provide an opportunity to present the central role played by CBD national focal points in mobilizing stakeholders in Benin, Uganda and Madagascar. The process of building sectoral voluntary commitments will also be presented and discussed by the speakers.
