Integrating biodiversity is at the heart of the international agenda this year.
One month after the IUCN World Conservation Congress, the high-level segment of the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) took place. This first segment took place in hybrid format from October 11 to 15, 2021, and brought together representatives from over 100 countries.
BIODEV2030, a project in line with the Kunming Declaration
On this occasion, the Kunming Declaration which lists 17 commitments to halt the erosion of biodiversity by 2030.
This text echoes the objectives of BIODEV2030!
In particular, it calls on states to promote the integration of biodiversity into decision-making processes; to strengthen cross-sectoral coordination mechanisms; to increase the use of ecosystem-based approaches to address biodiversity loss; and to work with all stakeholders to encourage them to make voluntary commitments for nature.
All these commitments confirm the relevance of the pilot approach being tested in the 16 participating countries, which is based on a scientific diagnosis of the threats to biodiversity in conjunction with the economic sectors, to feed the multi-stakeholder dialogue and thus lead to the adoption of voluntary sectoral commitments.
Climate and biodiversity: two inseparable components of the same challenge
The 17 recommendations of the Kunming Declaration reinforce the importance of integrating biodiversity across the board into the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, which will be discussed at a forthcoming working session in Geneva in January 2022, and then adopted at the second COP15 session from April 25 to May 8 2022 in Kunming (China).
At the time of the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Glasgow (UK), it is now crucial to treat climate and biodiversity issues as two inseparable components of the same challenge.
BIODEV2030 mobilizes stakeholders to ensure that the integration of biodiversity and sustainable ecosystem management are put into practice and recognized as essential solutions to today's environmental challenges!
